Always Hungry Grocery & Goods Brings Flavor and Heart to Carlsbad Village
A new kind of market has landed in Carlsbad — and it’s here to make grocery shopping personal.

Always Hungry Grocery & Goods is now open at 505 Oak Avenue, Suite B, in the heart of Carlsbad Village. Created by longtime event producer and hospitality vet Katie Jayne Sprenkel, this neighborhood market flips the grocery store experience on its head.
Gone are the sterile aisles and cookie-cutter selections. In their place: locally baked bread, just-picked produce from regenerative farms, and pre-made meals by local chefs — everything curated to inspire your next picnic, dinner party, or Tuesday night craving.
At Always Hungry, every product on the shelf must meet one of four criteria:

At Always Hungry, every product on the shelf must meet one of four criteria:
- Locally made
- Support an underrepresented group
- Be the best in its category
- Or simply be fun
That means you’ll find everything from tinned fish and probiotic labneh to adaptogenic cacao, naturally fermented sourdough, and candy made in small batches. It’s the kind of place where every label tells a story — and every purchase supports a dream.
Disco Boxes, Dinner Starters & Discovery
One of the market’s signature features is the Always Hungry Disco Box, a rotating selection of hand-picked goods that highlight local and artisan brands. Recent boxes included sparkling prebiotic drinks from Leisure Project, handcrafted Danish licorice, and dill harvested from the owner’s own backyard.
Fresh bread and produce arrive twice weekly, and the pre-made meals — think elevated, nourishing, and ready to eat — are made by local chefs and updated often. It’s a destination whether you’re prepping a full feast or assembling the perfect beach picnic.
More Than a Market — A Community Hub
Always Hungry isn’t only about what’s on the shelves. It’s about creating space — for families, friends, food lovers, and curious cooks. The store plans to host events like oyster shucking classes, sourdough starter workshops, and hands-on sessions for kids.

For founder Katie Jayne, this market is her medium. “Always Hungry is the vision of a former farm girl, designer, event producer, and food-obsessed woman,” she says. “I opened this store with one goal: to help people find things that other amazing people made.”
That includes products from women-owned businesses, immigrant chefs, farmers from down the road, and small-batch makers who put love into everything they do.
